Research Highlight
This comprehensive research study provides a thorough taxonomic revision of freshwater shrimps belonging to the genus Caridina across southern Thailand, utilizing an integrative taxonomic approach that combines traditional morphological examination with molecular DNA barcoding. Because these shrimps often exhibit significant morphological variation within species and striking similarities between different species, relying solely on physical appearance has historically led to considerable taxonomic confusion. By analyzing partial sequences of mitochondrial genes, the research team successfully delineated distinct evolutionary lineages belonging to 21 species, with nearly half being endemic to the region. Most notably, this extensive investigation led to the formal description of five brand-new species to science: Caridina kuehnei Macharoenboon et al., 2026, Caridina nangroma Macharoenboon et al., 2026, Caridina Srivijaya Macharoenboon et al., 2026, Caridina takkola Macharoenboon et al., 2026, and Caridina tambralinga Macharoenboon et al., 2026, each possessing restricted distributions in vulnerable freshwater habitats. The study further provides updated distribution maps and a practical identification key for all regional species.

งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ได้ศึกษาทบทวนอนุกรมวิธานของกุ้งแคระน้ำจืดในสกุล Caridina ทั่วภูมิภาคภาคใต้ของประเทศไทยอย่างละเอียด โดยทีมนักวิจัยได้นำวิธีการศึกษาแบบผสมผสานระหว่างลักษณะทางสัณฐานวิทยาภายนอกและการตรวจสอบรหัสพันธุกรรมดีเอ็นเอ (DNA barcoding) มาใช้ร่วมกัน เนื่องจากกุ้งในกลุ่มนี้มีความคล้ายคลึงกันสูงมากในแง่ของรูปร่าง ทำให้การจำแนกด้วยตาเปล่าทำได้ยากและมักเกิดความสับสน การวิเคราะห์สายวิวัฒนาการจากยีนบนไมโตคอนเดรียทำให้ปัจจุบันพบกุ้งในสกุลนี้ในภาคใต้ของไทยรวมทั้งสิ้น 21 ชนิด และสิ่งที่น่าสนใจเป็นอย่างยิ่งคือเกือบครึ่งหนึ่งของจำนวนดังกล่าวเป็นชนิดถิ่นเดียว (Endemic species) ที่สามารถพบได้เฉพาะในพื้นที่จำกัดของประเทศไทยเท่านั้น โดยงานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ได้นำไปสู่การค้นพบและบรรยายลักษณะของกุ้งชนิดใหม่ของโลกถึง 5 ชนิด ได้แก่ Caridina kuehnei Macharoenboon et al., 2026, Caridina nangroma Macharoenboon et al., 2026, Caridina Srivijaya Macharoenboon et al., 2026, Caridina takkola Macharoenboon et al., 2026, and Caridina tambralinga Macharoenboon et al., 2026 ซึ่งแต่ละชนิดมีถิ่นอาศัยจำเพาะในแหล่งน้ำธรรมชาติที่มีความเปราะบางต่อการถูกทำลาย การศึกษาในครั้งนี้ยังจัดทำแผนที่การกระจายและคู่มือการจำแนกขึ้นมาใหม่อีกด้วย

🎯 งานวิจัยครั้งนี้สอดคล้องกับเป้าหมายที่ 15. ปกป้อง ฟื้นฟู และสนับสนุนการใช้ระบบนิเวศบนบกอย่างยั่งยืน จัดการป่าไม้อย่างยั่งยืน ต่อสู้การกลายสภาพเป็นทะเลทราย หยุดการเสื่อมโทรมของที่ดินและฟื้นสภาพกลับมาใหม่ และหยุดการสูญเสียความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพ
💧 และมุ่งในประเด็นเป้าหมายย่อย 15.1 สร้างหลักประกันว่าจะมีการอนุรักษ์ การฟื้นฟู และการใช้ระบบนิเวศบนบกและแหล่งน้ำจืดในแผ่นดิน รวมทั้งบริการทางระบบนิเวศอย่างยั่งยืน
