Highlight Activities 2026: Five new species of the pill millipede genus Rhopalomeris Verhoeff, 1906 (Diplopoda, Glomerida) from Thailand
กิ้งกือกระสุนชนิดใหม่ในประเทศไทย 5 ชนิด จากสกุล Rhopalomeris Verhoeff, 1906 (Diplopoda, Glomerida)
By combining morphological examinations with DNA testing, scientists have discovered five new species of pill millipedes in Thailand.
These new millipedes can be easily distinguished from others by their unique color patterns and the distinct shape of their reproductive legs (telopods).
DNA analysis firmly confirmed that these five are indeed separate, new species.
Interestingly, researchers noticed that two specific species—one previously known and one newly discovered—show a wide variety of physical appearances and genetic differences even among their own kind.
This high level of variation makes sense because these two species are spread out over a very large geographic area.
To help future researchers, the study also provides highly magnified 3D images, a map of where these millipedes live, and an updated, step-by-step guide for identifying all known pill millipedes in this group.
นักวิทยาศาสตร์ได้ค้นพบกิ้งกือกระสุนชนิดใหม่ของโลกจำนวน 5 ชนิด ในประเทศไทย จากการศึกษาลักษณะทางสัณฐานวิทยาควบคู่กับการตรวจดีเอ็นเอ (DNA)
กิ้งกือสายพันธุ์ใหม่เหล่านี้มีลักษณะเด่นที่แตกต่างจากชนิดอื่นอย่างชัดเจน ทั้งในเรื่องของลวดลายสีสันบนลำตัวและโครงสร้างของขาที่ใช้ในการสืบพันธุ์
ผลการวิเคราะห์ทางพันธุกรรมช่วยยืนยันได้อย่างแน่ชัดว่าพวกมันเป็นสายพันธุ์ใหม่ที่แยกตัวออกมา
นอกจากนี้ นักวิจัยยังพบว่ากิ้งกือ 2 ชนิด ในกลุ่มนี้ (ชนิดที่เคยค้นพบแล้ว 1 ชนิด และชนิดใหม่อีก 1 ชนิด) มีความหลากหลายของรูปร่างหน้าตาและพันธุกรรมภายในสายพันธุ์ของตัวเองค่อนข้างสูง ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับพฤติกรรมการกระจายพันธุ์ของพวกมันที่ครอบคลุมพื้นที่เป็นบริเวณกว้าง
ท้ายนี้ งานวิจัยยังได้นำเสนอแผนที่แสดงแหล่งที่อยู่อาศัย ภาพถ่ายขยายความละเอียดสูงแบบสามมิติ (SEM) และคู่มือฉบับอัปเดตเพื่อช่วยในการระบุชนิดของกิ้งกือกระสุนในกลุ่มนี้ทั้งหมดให้มีความแม่นยำมากยิ่งขึ้น

เป้าหมายที่ 15. ปกป้อง ฟื้นฟู และสนับสนุนการใช้ระบบนิเวศบนบกอย่างยั่งยืน จัดการป่าไม้อย่างยั่งยืน ต่อสู้การกลายสภาพเป็นทะเลทราย หยุดการเสื่อมโทรมของที่ดินและฟื้นสภาพกลับมาใหม่ และหยุดการสูญเสียความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพ
และมุ่งในประเด็นเป้าหมายย่อย 15.4 สร้างหลักประกันว่าจะมีการอนุรักษ์ระบบนิเวศภูเขาและความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพของระบบนิเวศเหล่านั้น เพื่อจะเพิ่มพูนขีดความสามารถของระบบนิเวศเหล่านั้นที่จะให้ผลประโยชน์อันสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน ภายในปี 2573
